Smash Sausage Kitchen, Newtown -- or -- The Urban Mythographer

Meaning no disrespect to the team at Smash. I'm just not good enough a photographer to make a plate o' snags & mash look appealing. (And there's only so much a sprig of parsley can do.)

A good place to go for a feed, beers and a chat with friends. If nothing else, you could spend ages talking about the decor, which is a mix of mirrors (from all kinds of sources), mismatched furniture, lamps, and comic-style paintings. Not unlike what you'd find in the small bars around the place these days, only with more light and a little more space.

The venue was chosen by coeliac friends, as good sausages don't contain gluten. Smash only has one choice of sausage with gluten, thanks to the Guinness contained within. They also have a vegetarian sausage option. And a gluten-free dessert.

Others have pointed this out too: When you order one, two or three sausages for your meal they all have to be the same type. Kind of annoying, as it would be nice to try more of the flavours. But I guess part of the reason is to make you go back.

The total came to $250 for 8 people for meals, a salad, shared dessert and drinks. You could get away with a main + beer for under $30.

  1. Plus, service is great. At least it was about a year ago.

  2. Photographing "brown food" is THE WORST, especially when the lighting is dim. I think the apprentice did a pretty smashing (get it SMASHing) job!

  3. I quite like this place and yes, it's a bit annoying that you can't mix up the sausages on some of the dishes.

  4. It is so hard to get a good picture in here. Poor Apprentice. I think you may have been here just before we went. I'm so glad you took a picture of the painting on the back wall. I didn't notice it and after we left, a dining companion pointed out to me that they had the same painting I do in my living room.

    I love this place.

  5. I gotta get myself to visit this joint soon. This is the second blog I have read today about this places. Mash and sausages sounds wicked! Love your comic strip style format too!

  6. Smash impressed me, despite my dislike of mash (happily their version is rustic enough that my brain thought of it as squished potato).

    And filling! Hoary crap.
